Introduction to Utilitarianism

A brief introduction to utilitarianism, including what it is, how it works, and why it's important. This lesson locates utilitarianism as a teleological theory within normative ethics, and explains its relationship to other ethical theories. Additionally, it covers the differences between teleological and deontological theories, how utilitarians define good and evil for the purpose of ethical decision-making, and how utilitarianism is different from egoism.
